As a knitter, you’re always thinking a month or two ahead to when projects are completed (well possibly more if you’re like me and not the fastest knitter!) But these ladies from Corsham are really organised, and have already knitted 2,000 poppies to sell in October for Remembrance Day to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. The poppies cost £2 each, and they’re hoping to raise a whopping £4,000!
The group meets once a month at Corsham Community Centre, and have always been great charity knitters. The members have made items for the Big Issue, Bath hospital and old people’s homes, and they rely on donations of wool for their creations.
The poppies are certainly a great charity knit as each one only takes 10 minutes to make, and the group has been knitting them everywhere from in the car to in front of the telly! The original pattern from the RBL website was deemed too big, so the group’s founder, Gwen Davis, set about making a smaller poppy suitable for button holes. The design has now evolved into four or five variations, and features not just poppies for button holes, but also for hair grips and to be mounted on sticks for people to put in their gardens. It’s certainly an impressive effort, and we hope the ladies will reach their target in November.
