Following a pattern

Keep tabs on where you are in a pattern by using a row counter or self-adhesive repositionable strip such as a Post-It note to mark the row you are working on. This is great if the phone goes!

Read a pattern thoroughly before you start knitting. Make sure you check for unfamiliar abbreviations and note phrases to prevent mistakes later on.

When you’re following a pattern where various different sizes are given, take a brightly coloured highlighter pen and mark the particular one you need, throughout the pattern, wherever there are multiple figures in brackets. That way, you shouldn’t get blinded by all the numbers!

I would also add take a photocopy of it, that way thats the one that gets marked and scribbled over, leaving the original intact for next time.
I think copyright rules would allow for personal use like this. (I'm sure one of the mods will put me right lol)

If you have a Smartphone, I've found the Knit Minder application is brilliant - can add the needles you own and keeps numerous different counters for each project you;re working on. I've been do some circular knittingm, so it's difficult to use a normal counter, but this app has been the best £1.79 I've spent in a while!

Don't forget your row counters you can use safety pins or even hair grips placing one in every few rows. It makes it easy to count up how many rows you are.
