Cute cardi (toddler cardi)

Pattern problems? Yarn in a tangle? Maybe we can help!

Cute cardi (toddler cardi)

Postby Lisalooby » Tue May 29, 2012 7:17 pm

I have recently learnt to knit and am knitting the pink toddler cadi in the June 12 addition of knit today. I have just changed to the 4.5mm needles and have got to row 2 of the pattern. The next thing it says is to continue working in this manner until the work measures 16.5cm. Does this mean to keep following the pattern section on the left of the page as I have done with rows 1 and 2?

Any help will be much appreciated :)

Yes, I think you are correct - the first and last 2/4/6/9 stitches (depending which size you are making) will be stocking stitch i.e odd numbered rows knit, even rows purl. The central 58 stitches will consist of the pattern panel repeated twice, that is to say 2x29 stitches.

This is quite a challenging knit for a beginner, but there is nothing that I can see that should be impossible for you. Don't panic and you will end up with a garment to be really proud of!

Good luck!

Thank you very much.
I will put up a pic if I manage to complete it :)
I have read on through the pattern a little and on the left front and the right front when you change to bigger needles again it says to do row 2 of the pattern for row 1 and row 2 and to carry on working in this manner again. Slightly confused. Where do I go from there? Does it mean only do row 2 of the pattern or should row 1 use row 1 of the pattern. Is this a mistake?

If I am interpreting it correctly, on the left front, you more or less do what you have done on the back, but with only one pattern repeat. On the right front, you work the purl increase row, then start with row 2 of the pattern. This means the fronts will be sort of mirror images of each other, which is the effect you need. Hope I've got that right and that this makes sense!

Ok. So I have done most of the back and am at the 'shape the raglans' part. Where it says to pattern do I start half way through the row of pattern to match up with what I have cast off and 'skpo'd'? That seems to be the only logical way to do it but I'm new to this :s

Any help will be fab. Thank you xx

Yes that's right, you need to keep the pattern correct throughout all of this decreasing.

Good luck, it will be lovely when you've finished it. xxx

:( I have gotten to the shape neck part of the left front. It has 2 rows then it says to work the pattern for 5 rows dec at the raglan edge on every row and dec 1st at the neck edge in every row. But is there an easy way to figure out which part of the pattern I'm at with all the decreasing at both sides? Thisnhasnstumped me

Ok so I was getting on really well til I came to a complete stand still. I have done the left front of the cardigan and am now on the right front. When I knitted the left front at the shape Raglan part it said cast off 5st at beginning of next row then
next row: k1,Skpo, pattern to end
next row: pattern to last 2sts, p2

For the shape raglan on the right front it also says to cast 5 off at beginning of next row but it then says
Next row: pattern to last 3sts,k2tog,k1
Next row: p2, pattern to end

If I do this for the right side then the wrong side of the pattern will be getting decreased. It should be decreasing gradually at the same side as where the 5sts were cast off like the left side shouldn't it?

Can anyone help and give me an idea of what to do to make sure it is correct?
Thanks xx

Hi, Lisa.

For the cardigan, you will always have reverse shaping on each front, and one side should end on a wrong side row before the raglan shaping, while the other side will end on a right side row before shaping.

Left front: End on a wrong side row.Cast off 5 stitches on knit row, work purl row. Start decreases on knit row.

Right front: End on a right side row. Cast off 5 stitches on a purl row. Start decreases on knit row.

Your centers should be staying straight, while there is shaping occurring on the edges of your pieces if you lay them down side by side. Good luck with your project. It is a charmer!
