What is the best yarn and crochet hooks to use for crochet?
Katherine Blain, Stockton
Most yarns are easy to crochet with, but as a beginner you should avoid mohair, slub yarn, chunky yarns, or eyelash yarns. Use the right size hook for the yarn, for example, use a 3.5-4.5mm hook for double knit and 4-5.5mm hook for aran weights. Practise with standard-weight yarns before you try using a larger hook, an uneven yarn or a yarn too fluffy to see the stitches. Crochet hooks come in various forms – the standard grey ones tend to be metal with a plastic coating. They also come in bamboo, birch and Addi makes nickel-coated hooks with a plastic handle. Try them all to see which one suits you best. Wooden ones often look pretty, but can catch on the yarn.
