Twisted versus cabled?

Please can you tell me what the difference is between twisted stitches and cabled ones?
Melanie Crawford, Berkeley

Certainly, Melanie – twisted stitches do not involve the use of a cable needle. Instead, the stitches are knitted in a different order from normal, sometimes approaching from the back as well as from the front. In cabling, some stitches are placed onto the cable needle to be held apart so that they can be incorporated later, thus forming the twisting over of the stitches. Often, twisted stitches and cabled ones will be classed together in stitch books as they can produce some similar effects.
